First Annual South Columbia Regional Heritage Fair
On June 12th, 2026, Grade 3 and 4 students gathered at Glenmerry Elementary School for the first annual South Columbia Regional Heritage Fair. Presentations covered an incredible range of topics and showcased the hard work, creativity, and enthusiasm that the students brought into learning and sharing their local history!
A handful of projects were selected for display in our entrance gallery at the Rossland Museum. They’ll be here until Saturday, June 20th, so stop by to check out the presentations by these local students!
Wait, what is a Heritage Fair?
Everyone’s familiar with a Science Fair, but Heritage Fairs are a little less common! Heritage Fairs are an opportunity to delve into a specific topic of history and practice all of those valuable historical research, writing, and presentation skills. Usually, teachers will host an internal competition for their own class before proceeding to the regional fair.
Launching a Heritage Fair has been one of our dreams for several years! We were delighted to partner with Ms. Plamondon (Rossland Summit School) and Ms. Ullman (Glenmerry Elementary) to work with their students to make it happen. The Grade 3 and 4 students worked on individual projects, delving into specific historical topics that interested them — from the Rossland Drill Hall to the legendary Flying Steamshovel, and everything in between. They presented their findings with poster boards, models, and digital presentations to bring their research to the table.
Special thanks to Lori McWatters for helping with the adjudication and project feedback — and of course to the teachers who worked with their classes to put together these projects.
The 2026 South Columbia Regional Heritage Fair was supported in part by Canada’s History, Columbia Basin Trust, and Teck Trail Operations.
What’s next for the South Columbia Regional Heritage Fair?
We’re looking for teachers and their classes to participate next year — and for volunteers to help with tasks like planning and adjudication. Please get in touch with Skylar at community@rosslandmuseum.ca if you’re interested in being a part of this exciting program!
