Winter Carnival Exhibit at Curiosity Clothing!
It’s almost time for the Rossland Winter Carnival, which means we have a new outreach exhibit at Curiosity Clothing & Gifts!
Have you heard about Rossland’s masquerades on ice? These large costume contests often took place at the beginning of the Winter Carnival and could draw crowds to rival those of the sporting events.
By wearing masks and costumes, participants could step outside everyday life. Rosslanders could experiment with identity, poke fun at social roles, or simply enjoy being part of something joyful and shared. For many, the masquerade was more than entertainment - it was a chance to be seen differently and to celebrate winter in a way that was both personal and communal.
Developed by our Collections Coordinator, Eden Garvin, our new exhibit Expression in Disguise: The Rossland Winter Carnival Masquerade on Ice explores the early masquerades and the freedom Rosslanders had to explore who they were - if only for an evening - through costume, performance, and play. Showcasing some of popular costumes from the 1900-1920s, particularly the Kodak Girl and the Angel of Mons.
Utilizing textiles from the Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre collection and select pieces from the Rossland Light Opera Players costume stores, this exhibit harkens back to one of the most colourful events in Rossland’s history.
Expression in Disguise will be on location at Curiosity Clothing & Gifts from
January 16th to 30th
A big thanks to Trinda and Curiosity Clothing & Gifts for always giving us a space to share unique Rossland stories with you in downtown Rossland! We couldn’t do our outreach exhibit program without amazing community partners like Trinda!
