The Rossland Museum's Sarah Taekema-Slot interviews Shirley Vance about her life in Rossland. Topics include skiing, Alice Jesse, the Grey Mountain Grind, Rossland's Chinese residents, and growing up in a mining community. This interview was conducted on September 10, 2019 as part of the Rossland Memories Oral History Project.
Shirley Vance (née Tindall) was born on November 1, 1932 and was the only child of Ethel and Carrol Tindall. Growing up in Rossland, Shirley fell in love with the outdoors, spending many of her formative years skiing on Red Mountain. After graduating from Rossland High School in 1950, she went on to become a teacher. She taught in Rossland and Vancouver until she married US airman Riley Vance on May 2, 1960. During their 39 year marriage, Shirley and Riley travelled the world and raised two children - Carroll and Wilson. Shirley passed away on August 26, 2023.
