Community Collections - New Exhibit at the Rossland Public Library

For years, we have shown you pieces from our collection, but now it's your time to shine!

From brooches to bottles, we're highlighting what you love to collect! Community Collections explores not only what our amazing community members collect, but the stories behind those collections. Join us as we get to know each other through a different lens as a community of collectors.

Community Collections will feature rotating collections from Rossland community members every few weeks. The exhibit is hosted in the Rossland Public Library and can be found in the children’s section.

Our resident brooch-wearing Collections Manager, Sara W, is starting this exhibit out with highlighting some of her favourite pieces from her extensive brooch collection. If you’ve been around the museum the last four years, you have probably seen quite a few of her funky brooches, but we’re always shocked when she tells how big her collection is. With over 80 brooches and 120 enamel pins in her collection, Sara always has a different colourful addition to her wardrobe.

Sara W’s favourite brooch in her collection

When I got my first brooch, I didn’t think I would end up collecting them - but I’ve been collecting brooches and pins for over ten years now. I quickly found that they let me express myself and added some character to my outfits. With such a big collection, I found it hard to narrow it down to a few to highlight!

One of Libby’s favourite dolls in her collection

Long-time Rossland resident and Museum volunteer, Libby Martin, is our second community member to highlight what they collect. According to Libby, dolls are the last thing that people expect for her to collect! She had a hard time deciding what dolls to highlight since she loves all them, but ultimately settled on the nine she did as they represent where she is from, her travels, and key memories throughout her life.

I never intended to start collecting dolls, it just sort of happened. It’s the least likely thing that people would think I collect. I got the first one when on a trip to Quebec City because I liked it and the collection has just grown since then. My dolls range in style representing where I come from, places I have traveled, gifts from friends, and a few even made by my family.
