In 1895 Howard Sylvester Wallace, who was a fundamental player in the development of the city and even became Rossland’s second Mayor in 1898, was one of the original owners of the Wallace building. He and Charles Staynor Wallis built it in 1899 as an income-generating property. It is styled like many of the original buildings in Rossland’s history, with a false front, a street-level business space, and apartments above. One of the first businesses in the building was the Morrison & Bryenton Grocers. Robert F. Green was the owner of the building between 1913 and 1923, and he ran the Conservative Party Headquarters through the commercial space. From 1923 to 1968, the building was used for the Rossland Salvation Army. Currently, the shop is owned by Joe Bye, who is a wood carver.
