Night at the Museum Student Showcase - Claire Sutherland

For Night at the Museum, Collections Assistant Claire delved into the backgrounds of some of our collection’s smallest pieces!

-Written by Claire

For this summer’s Night at the Museum, I displayed one of the outreach exhibits I created. This exhibit is called “Small Artifacts, Big Backstories”. For this exhibit, the purpose is to display artifacts that have something interesting about them that you might not notice just at first glance. I also wanted to show how some of our seemingly ordinary artifacts have big backstories that evoke the diverse and interesting history of the people of Rossland.

The artifacts I chose for this exhibit had to be physically small in size, but we also had to have enough information on them that they could have a good backstory. These objects included: City of Rossland coupon bonds, a CPR cypher codebook, five small Cominco elephants, three different Rossland Bakeries coupons, and a bowl from Tasmania made by one of Rossland High School’s art teachers, J.R Borsos. These artifacts needed research to flesh out their backstories, which took some time and many emails!

This exhibit will be displayed at the Rossland Public Library in the spring, so you will have the chance to see all the artifacts and read about their backstories if you missed it this time.

For all their help in creating this exhibit, we’d like to thank Rossland City Hall, the Tasmanian Archives, the Australian State Archives, and Jeremy Borsos. I would also like to thank everyone who came out and saw the exhibit as well as the other students’ work. It was great to see everyone and talk with the community!
