A decade ago, nearly half of the Museum’s budget was funded by the City of Rossland. Today, the City contributes less than 10% of the Museum’s budget; this funding contributes to the core operating expenses and is irreplaceable! Building on it, we’ve been able to find more ways to bring money into the community, to help do the things we love - and provide the services and opportunities that Rosslanders want to see in our community! Collection Highlights

1998.29.1 - J.R. Borsos Bowl

  • Joseph Robert Borsos was a Hungarian ceramicist trained at Hungary’s Royal Academy of Art

  • Immigrated to Tasmania in 1944

  • Bowl made in the 1950s when he was in Hobart, Tasmania

  • Borsos and his family moved to Rossland in the late 1950s, bringing this bowl with them

  • While in Rossland, Borsos taught art classes at Rossland High School and throughout the community

 A2024.017 - Message of the Doukhobor Book

  • Given to J.S.C. Fraser by Peter Verigin in 1913

  • James Sutherland Chrisholm Fraser was born in Ontario in 1862

  • Fraser served as the manager of the Rossland Bank of Montreal branch from 1896-1912

  • Fraser died in Toronto in 1914

  • Peter Verigin was a Russian-born Doukhobor leader who came to Canada in 1902

  • Verigin and the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood moved to the Kootenays in 1907.

  • Verigin was killed in a train explosion - possibly an assassination, though nobody was ever convicted - on a CPR train in Farron (a stop located just north of Paulson Summit) in 1924
