Farewell to Our Summer Staff

2026 RMDC Summer Staff - Gabe Mann (archives assistant), Clare Snelgrove (Research Assistant), Ronan Hinds (collections assistant), Erin Baker (heritage interpreter), Ezri Sneddon (heritage interpreter), and Brenna Campbell (collections assistant). Missing: Bella and Sawyer Palmer, our amazing Camp Black Bear counsellors!

We had amazing summer here at the museum, and that is in large part thanks to the awesome staff that joined us this year! You’ll still see a few of these faces around the museum, but most of our summer students have returned to their studies.

Thanks to funding from the Trail & District Arts Council, we have begun rehousing our large textile collection!

Webpage Updates: The Cominco Story

Today, Teck is one of Canada’s biggest mining powerhouses, with the Trail smelter still central to their operations. But did you know that at one point it was owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway?

The smelter and accompanying railway were built by Fritz Heinze in 1896 as a way to process the riches from Red Mountain. In 1898, he decided to sell his assets in the region to the highest bidder and the CPR got into the mining game. They broke off their mining assets into a separate company in 1906 and the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Company of Canada was born, sparking a legacy of metallurgical excellence that has continued for 120 years!

Rumored to have been used at one of the brothels in Rossland and stored at Henderson's Livery when it shut down
Was never claimed so passed down through the Henderson Family for generations
Henderson's Livery was owned and operated by Murdoch Henderson
Murdoch was one of six Henderson siblings that moved to Rossland from Nova Scotia

Lorraine Santori met Leonard Swift at a dance in 1942, got married 4 years later on June 2, 1946
Rode around Rossland on Len’s motorcycle inviting people to their wedding ceremony
Married at Father Mac's house instead of Sacred Heart Catholic Church because Len wasn't catholic
Lorraine and Len celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 2021
