FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ROSSLAND, BC – Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre receives Council approval to move forward in Phase I renovations.
In 2012, the Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre (RMDC) embarked on a six-phase renewal project with the help of major stakeholders, including Teck Trail Operations, the City of Rossland, and the wonderful support of the citizens of Rossland and area. Thanks to a recent $100,000 grant from Canada Cultural Spaces and the go-ahead from the City of Rossland, the Phase 1 renovations will begin shortly.
The construction period will be 16 to 18 weeks long, so the Museum will re-open just in time for the summer season. Renovations include a brand new archives, reading/research room, meeting space, public washrooms, and an entrance gallery that will include the lobby, gift shop, visitor centre, and additional exhibition and programming space.
This renovation is being funded in major part from the Canadian Department of Western Economic Diversification, Government of Canada’s Cultural Spaces Fund, the Columbia Basin Trust, BC Government Resort Municipality Initiative, City of Rossland, and our partner and funder – Teck Trail Operations.
The ongoing support of our community with hundreds of hours of volunteering and major assistance and contributions to our fundraising efforts has also raised over $25,000 towards the project. The Lily May Heritage Raffle is our current fundraising opportunity with only 140 tickets being sold for a chance to win a 12-person catered dinner with cocktails, entertainment, and more all in Rossland’s historic Old Fire Hall. Second prize is a weekend at Nelson’s Hume Hotel & Spa with dinner in the Library Lounge, and third prize is a night for two at The Blaylock Mansion with English-style breakfast. Tickets are being sold at the Museum (Wed-Sat 12pm-5pm), The Office – 2105 Columbia Ave (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm), and Mountain Nugget Chocolate Company – 1938 Columbia Ave (Tues-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 12pm-5pm). The winner will be drawn on Saturday, January 28th during the Rossland Winter Carnival by Lily May herself with the help of Olaus Jeldness!
