Job Type: 6-month Internship, Full-time

Salary: $11-13/hour

The Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre’s mission is to preserve and dynamically present the heritage of Rossland and area. We do this with comprehensive indoor and outdoor displays on the industrial and social history of Rossland with a particular emphasis on the mining and skiing histories of the area. We are located directly on the “Mining in the Kootenays” historic site – on top of the historic Black Bear Mine. Additionally, we have an extensive, community archives, a provincial visitor information centre, numerous educational programs in-house and through outreach activities, downtown heritage walking tours, and various special events throughout the year.

Job Description:

The Collection Assistant will work with existing staff and current and new volunteers to complete a number of collections management and research projects. This includes accessioning a back log of objects; creating special storage mounts for fragile objects; inventorying and preparing the archives for temporary storage prior to a major renovation, working with a consulting professional archivist; inventorying and preparing condition reports for current exhibits throughout the main museum building (spanning mining history, skiing history, and social history); research and display development on a local weather station, Women’s suffrage history, and other internal research; managing public requests for access, research, or photos; manage any incoming object or documentary history donations; evaluate possible collections database programs; and more collections management tasks.

The following is a list of essential qualifications necessary to this position:
-Recent graduate from museum, archival, or library studies with a focus in collections management and preservation
-Extensive experience and interest in working with community history collections and/or documentary history
-Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
-Excellent research skills
-Should be very well organized, detail-oriented, and able to problem solve
-Excellent computer skills (incl. Microsoft Office, WordPress, Dropbox)
-Excellent public speaking abilities; articulate, polite, and friendly
-A passion for history and education

The following desired qualifications may be considered an asset for this position:
-Creativity and enthusiasm
-Experience working with volunteers, especially if in a supervisory role
-Knowledge of Rossland’s or West Kootenay history
-Current First Aid certificate
