This position is subject to funding and only available to students who have been in full-time studies and intend to return to full-time studies in the fall.

The Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre’s mission is to preserve and dynamically present the heritage of Rossland and area. We do this with comprehensive indoor and outdoor displays on the industrial and social history of Rossland with a particular emphasis on the mining and skiing histories of the area. We are located directly on the “Mining in the Kootenays” historic site – on top of the historic Black Bear Mine. Additionally, we have an extensive community archives, a provincial visitor information centre, numerous educational programs in-house and through outreach activities, downtown heritage walking tours, and various special events throughout the summer.

Job Description:

The Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre (RMDC) operates a local, community museum and visitor centre. This summer, we are organizing 9 weeks of summer day camps for ages 6-11 with the following themes: Time Travelers; Earth Explorers; Science; and Art. The Camp Counsellor will assist the other programming staff in the planning, operation, and evaluation of our summer kids camps through July and August. Planning includes organizing each week’s requirements (registrants, allergies, permissions, etc.), assisting with material prep for all crafts, experiments, and activities, and other tasks as required.

The Camp Counsellor is directly responsible for assisting with the preparation, operation, and evaluation of the Summer Kids’ Camps working very closely with the Operation & Programs Assistant and Museum Assistants. They will also assist with the operation of the gift shop, admissions, concession, and Visitor Centre as time permits. Routine maintenance, including painting, cleaning, and light grounds keeping may also be required.

The following is a list of essential qualifications necessary to this position:

  • Experience working with families and children of all ages
  • Experience and an interest in organizing crafts, games, experiments, and kids activities
  • An interest in Rossland’s history and everything the area has to offer locals and visitors alike
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, planning experience, and a passion for education and history
  • Public speaking experience; Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Experience in conflict resolution and problem-solving

The following desired qualifications may be considered an asset for this position:

  • Customer service experience; experience with cash registers, POS machines, computers, etc.
  • Experience working in the tourism and/or cultural sector
  • Excellent computer skills (incl. use of Microsoft Office, Excel, Dropbox, etc.)
  • Minor labour and equipment maintenance experience
  • Current First Aid certificate and RCMP Security Clearance may be required
